Motorcycling
Motorcycling has become a very enjoyable part of my life, having only completed a few years commuting on a single cylinder 200cc Kawasaki Z200 bike on less crowded roads when I first married. I didn’t bother to pass my test in those days when it was easy - just a ride around the block.
In 2004 I regained an interest in bikes and undertook the Direct Access driving test before buying a Harley Davidson Softail Heritage.
Concerned about peer pressure and riding in groups, I rode solo for 5 years before finally test riding a BMW 1200 RT because I wanted better brakes and Harley totally ignored my request to offer me a kit for my bike. Within a 20 minute test ride I just knew the BMW was a better and safer bike. I had more braking on a single finger than jumping on both brakes on the Harley. I gave up the glorious sound and all that chrome and it took several months to finally confirm this was a good decision.
As I adapted to the BMW 1200RT, I soon became aware of the need to freshen up my skills and looked for Advanced rider training.
I met guys from the TVAM (Thames Vale Advanced Motorcyclists) at the Basingstoke Festival of Transport in 2010 and with my wife beside me I could see that this was a really appropriate route to get the skills and join motorcycle social group. Having now passed the Advanced motorcycle test, I feel reassured when riding this high powered bike and frequently join group rides which has transformed my pleasure enormously.
