Stop missfuelling a diesel car with petrol

 

Having purchased my first diesel car and being a 2 car owner , I was anxious to avoid missfuelling the diesel car with petrol.

 

Putting Petrol in a diesel car is not immediately obvious and the car can be driven away, often for long distance. The problem is that the petrol will ruin the engine and in the case of a friend of mine with a BMW X5, it cost £4,500 to repair the engine - at his expense!

 

Initial research lead me to consider an adapter that slots into the filler pipe at £29.95. Then by chance I spotted this gadget at just £4.95. It’s a simple audible warning device that fits onto the filler flap and when opened and the device has light fall on it, it emits a warning “STOP DIESEL REMEMBER DIESEL”

 

The warning is given twice before silencing. Though the batteries cannot be replaced, it should last around 600 times. That could be 10 years on a weekly fill up!

I purchased mine from Camberley Autofactors off the counter. Halfords has them at £6.99, Ebay for just £3 plus £0.60 postage.

IF you do add petrol by mistake;

You can drive If you have only put in a small amount (say, 1 gallon) and can top off with diesel. The more the petrol is diluted the better, so fill up again once the tank has partially emptied.

 

I have read that if you click to open the doors, it can start the fuel pump, which will mix the fuel, even if you haven’t turned the key.  Call your main dealer to get advice.

 

AA Fuel Assist (you’ll remember its the AA) will do a drain down for £176.50, including properly disposing of the contaminated fuel.

 

Better to buy a recommended protective device now!

The AA says petrol in diesel can dilute its natural lubrication and cause metal-to-metal damage. The further it travels into the system, the more expensive the repair. In extreme cases, it can be cheaper to fit a new engine explained a spokesperson.
